PRIMARY FOCUS / ROLE

Outreach, meeting students with disabilities

THE WHY

In Young Life, we describe our ministry as meeting the furthest out, and we do this by going into their spaces. Young Life Capernaum gives teens and young adults with and without disabilities the chance to experience fun and adventure, to develop fulfilling friendships, and to challenge their limits while building self-esteem through club, camp, and other exciting activities. It's vital that they have a space where they belong and grow as an individual!

CURRENT PRAYER NEEDS

We're taking 12 students to camp this summer! We have 5 new students going to summer camp, so prayers that the trip is smooth for them. For the other 7, prayers that we get intentional conversations with them about Jesus and get to know more of their story!

Young Life Capernaum is about creating spaces where teens and young adults with and without disabilities can meet Jesus and grow in their faith

RECENT STORY OR TESTIMONY

One of our friends has been coming to club for a few years now but has had some difficulties connecting with leaders and other students. This past year, we have seen her begin to flourish through time at camp by being a really kind friend and sharing more with leaders, which was not happening just a year ago. This past semester, she had the opportunity to serve at one of the Young Life camps for a weekend and this stretched her immensely! She typically handles situations by getting mad and shutting down, so having to serve tables brought this out quickly. When she served her first table, she asked me to do the work and she would watch. Quickly after introducing ourselves and giving them their food, she began to grow in confidence in herself and being a friend to those she just met. A year ago, she wouldn't have even come on this work crew weekend but she allowed herself to go through something hard. These opportunities allow her to see that she has purpose and safe space to grow as Jesus created her.
